It can be quite startling if a dental crown comes off, especially if it’s the front of your mouth. If it’s during business hours, you will want to contact your dentist as soon as possible and try to have it re-cemented. It is important to have it recovered as soon as possible, to prevent the tooth from shifting or moving.
If you are not near the dentist office there are some things you may be able to try.
First you will want to examine the crown and make sure it is still in tact. It should appear like a small bucket. Look at the tooth and look at the crown and try to match the fit, without forcing it. Once placed, carefully bite down to make sure the crown is in place.
There are some temporary dental cement’s on the market to help hold the crown, but Dr. Julian Thomas, a top dentist in Greenville SC, recommends only using toothpaste for temporary retention.

Flossing your teeth daily is important. This short video from Colgate demonstrates how to floss. Here are the steps per the ADA:
- Use about 18 inches of floss wound around one of your middle fingers, with the rest wound around the opposite middle finger.
- Hold the floss tightly between the thumbs and forefingers and gently insert it between the teeth.
- Curve the floss into a “C” shape against the side of the tooth.
- Rub the floss gently up and down, keeping it pressed against the tooth. Don’t jerk or snap the floss.
- Floss all your teeth. Don’t forget to floss behind your back teeth.
Our dentist recommends you floss daily to live longer. 😉 Seriously though, it’s important. Here’s even more tips on brushing and flossing.
