Texting and Driving Kills

Brandon Keever and SonCindy, our manager, lost her nephew in a tragic car accident.  He sent 11 text messages 15 minutes leading up to incident.

Using your phone and driving just doesn’t mix.  We’ve heard it before, but this hits close to home and we’re committing to leave the phone alone.

Brandon Keever, 30, died on May 31, 2011 after crossing the center line and hitting a semi head-on.  His son, Brenden, 10, and loving family will miss him dearly.

Don’t use your phone and drive.  It isn’t worth it.

A Garden’s Summer Needs

FlowersBarb Tewell is responsible for creating color and life to make our beautiful entrance.  She maintains the flowers around our area.  When asked to share some tips we can all use, she provided the following:

With June temperatures like mid-summer, proper watering and mulching will save you time and expense and promote garden health.

Watering…

  • DO NOT water in the afternoon. Early morning is best so leaves have time to dry. Afternoon watering has a large loss to the air.
  • One deep watering promotes root health as opposed to several light sprinklings. Lawns need one deep watering a week – no more. Flowers  (primarily annuals) benefit from extra hand waterings.  Baskets and most planters need daily watering especially when temperature exceeds 80.  Newly planted shrubs also like one deep weekly watering. As you water your planters and hanging baskets (daily in HOT weather), keep your birdbaths filled and enjoy the birds as they frolic in the water!
  • A good automatic watering session can take HOURS in each zone.  When doing by hand, spray foliage but direct majority of water to the ground.  When a  9×13 cake pan set at the edge of the sprinklers reaches 1”, then you know how long to water!

Mulching…

  • Choose a mulch you like and only add to a depth of 2” max!  Any more is detrimental and a waste of money. Do not mound mulch up a tree trunk. In your gardens a thin layer of freshly cut lawn grass is great in the pathways but do not make too deep as it can get moldy.

Extra…

  • Consider blueberry bushes: attractive, nutritious,  easy to grow. Plant at least 2 different varieties, feed acid based fertilizer like Hollytone in early spring.  5 bushes normally feeds a family of 4.

Meet Our Gardener

Photo of our Gardener, Barb TewellBarbara Tewell is responsible for creating color and life to make our entrance beautiful and inviting.  She maintains the flowers and gardens around the property.

Barb grew up in a small farming community, and raised her own veggies; her mother was an avid flower gardener, dad made all the beds and gardens, and her sister and she kept them weeded and hoed. Therefore, their 1.5 acres was a large food and flower garden. Composting and recycling was a way of life 60-70 years ago and they were raised with “Waste not, want not!” as the wells could easily run dry in July.

Barb’s husband, a CPA, had several clients who were nurserymen, and she, in hospital management, dreamed of owning a garden center. That became a reality in 1996 with the purchase of Roper Mtn Nursery.  They relocated to Tanner Rd in 2000 and renamed the business The Garden Treasury.  They lived the dream for 15 years and retired for a second time in March of 2011.  Barb shares, “I never realized that all the lessons learned growing up about mulching and conserving water would be the basis of a livelihood in my later years!”

We’ve very grateful Barb continues caring for our place and now sharing her knowledge and experience online with our patients.

Barb is available for consulting or private maintenance.  You may reach her directly at 864-238-0503.
