Filling in a tooth

Why do I need a filling?

Dr. Thomas explains exactly what causes cavities and how to treat it, with a filling…

Tooth decay (cavities) is a very common disease, in fact it is the most common disease in humans. It is caused by bacteria in the mouth attaching too teeth and feeding on what the host (person) is eating. If your diet is high in refined carbohydrates such as sugar and snack foods (potato chips), the bacteria multiply quickly and produce acid. The acid dissolves tooth structure and invade the tooth resulting in decay. If the decay is severe enough it should be removed and replaced with a filling.

There are two commonly used types of filling materials, amalgam (silver fillings) and composite (tooth colored fillings). Although fillings are considered to be permanent restorations, they often have to be replaced over time. It is very important to avoid decay in the first place. Brushing and flossing at least two times a day and a diet low in refined carbohydrates is the best way to prevent decay and the loss of tooth structure.
