Barb Tewell is responsible for creating color and life to make our beautiful entrance. She maintains the flowers around our area. When asked to share some tips we can all use, she provided the following:
With June temperatures like mid-summer, proper watering and mulching will save you time and expense and promote garden health.
Watering…
- DO NOT water in the afternoon. Early morning is best so leaves have time to dry. Afternoon watering has a large loss to the air.
- One deep watering promotes root health as opposed to several light sprinklings. Lawns need one deep watering a week – no more. Flowers (primarily annuals) benefit from extra hand waterings. Baskets and most planters need daily watering especially when temperature exceeds 80. Newly planted shrubs also like one deep weekly watering. As you water your planters and hanging baskets (daily in HOT weather), keep your birdbaths filled and enjoy the birds as they frolic in the water!
- A good automatic watering session can take HOURS in each zone. When doing by hand, spray foliage but direct majority of water to the ground. When a 9×13 cake pan set at the edge of the sprinklers reaches 1”, then you know how long to water!
Mulching…
- Choose a mulch you like and only add to a depth of 2” max! Any more is detrimental and a waste of money. Do not mound mulch up a tree trunk. In your gardens a thin layer of freshly cut lawn grass is great in the pathways but do not make too deep as it can get moldy.
Extra…
- Consider blueberry bushes: attractive, nutritious, easy to grow. Plant at least 2 different varieties, feed acid based fertilizer like Hollytone in early spring. 5 bushes normally feeds a family of 4.
