When Should My Child First See A Dentist?

Boy Brushing Teeth

Children should be seen by a dentist as soon as they are able to cooperate  in the dental chair. This is usually around the age of three. I always encourage parents to bring their young children with them to familiarize them with the dental office.

Parents should start brushing their children’s teeth as soon as they start to erupt. Be sure to brush all surfaces of all of the teeth as well as the gums and tongue. Make sure that the child spits out the tooth paste rather than swallowing it.

Sugary drinks and snacks should be avoided whenever possible. This includes juices many of which have large amounts of added sugar. Some if the worst snacks are gummy candy and hard candies. These snacks have a tendency to stick to the teeth and increase the length of exposure to sugar. There are many sugar free alternatives to most candies.

Healthy snacks such as fruits,  vegetables and cheeses are much better choices and in general don’t contribute to tooth decay.

If your dentist refers you to an orthodontist be sure to go and have the child evaluated. A proper bite and tooth alignment will make for a much better dental future.

If you ever have questions about your child’s dental health don’t hesitate to call your dental office.  Better safe than sorry.
